A new children's museum for Saskatchewan
The Children's Discovery Museum is building a new, world-class facility in the Mendel building. With Kinsmen Park and PotashCorp Playland just across the street, we will be part of a fantastic destination for Saskatchewan's children and families, a resource for schools and preschools, and a major tourist attraction.
We move in after the art gallery has moved to its new home, the Remai Modern, and we expect to open in late 2018, after the City has done some upgrading to the building and we have built all the galleries and exhibits. We are currently hard at work with Argyle Design from Brooklyn, NY, a firm that specializes in building children's museum exhibits with input from the community. Also on the team are Strata Development, whose impressive portfolio illustrates a new legacy of work in design and construction management for their projects, and Kindrachuk Agrey, who are no strangers to the iconic Mendel building and its heritage, as their affair with the building started back in 2004 when selected to provide the design work on the expansion of the Mendel.
What will be at the new children's museum? The Master Plan for our expansion into the Mendel Building includes nine hands-on exhibit areas, and space for programming, performances, and special events.
With your donation to the Kid Approved Capital Campaign, you are ensuring that all children in our community will be able to experience the joy of discovery. Thank you for helping inspire tomorrow’s creative thinkers and leaders.
Who's building the new museum? How is the City of Saskatoon supporting the project? Will there be an admission? What's happening to the Conservatory? Check out our FAQ for answers to these, and more.
The new children’s museum will feature an interactive fibre art installation by Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam. It is being created especially for us and will be the first interactive, climbable structure of its kind in Canada.
