Educational programs for preschool to grade 3

Are you tired of saying "don't touch that" on field trips? Kids can touch everything at the Children's Discovery Museum! We are committed to serving the needs of children by providing hands-on exhibits and programming that stimulate curiosity and motivate learning. Our museum facilitates exploration as we believe that it is through self-guided discovery that children enhance their learning processes.

Call 306-683-2555 or email us at discovery@museumforkids.sk.ca to book your group visit today.

Exploration Visits

  • Creative play time in the museum, and an optional craft to take home.
  • $80 for up to 20 children, $4 for each additional child. Chaperones are free.
  • Maximum number of children: 30.

For all visits

  • Visits are two hours and must be booked in advance. Available times are Mondays and Tuesdays, morning or afternoon. The museum will be closed to the public during your visit. Exploration visits may also be booked on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, but the museum will remain open to the public.
  • We require a minimum of 1 adult for every 5 children.
  • There is no food or drink allowed in the museum. Hungry children are welcome to have a snack on the bench outside the museum.
  • No shoes.
  • Cancellation policy: Because these programs are in high demand, it is important for the Children's Discovery Museum to receive early notice if a group needs to cancel. Organizations that book a program and do not show up, or that cancel or postpone a booking without a valid reason (e.g. school buses aren’t running due to the weather) with less than a week’s notice, will be expected to pay the full fee for the visit.

Discovery Programs

As part of a Discovery visit, you may choose from one of the following programs, which complement the Saskatchewan Education Curriculum. All visits include a craft and storytelling.

Groups with more than 15 students will be divided in two. Free play is an important part of the visit, and we will do our best to ensure that children have plenty of time to explore the exhibits on their own. Programs are tailored to the level of the group. Please note that these programs are not suitable for children under the age of three.

Muddy Paws Animal Clinic

Muddy Paws Animal Clinic

Preschool to grade 2. Children will each "adopt" a stuffed animal for a short time. We will discuss the needs of these animals, and why our pets sometimes need to visit an animal clinic. Older children will classify the pets as mammals, birds, reptiles, fish or amphibians. We will conclude by looking at animal x-rays.

Construction for Kids

Construction for Kids

Preschool to grade 3. Through hands on activities children will discover the relationship between two dimensional and three dimensional shapes. The children will be given the opportunity to re-build our playhouse or build a structure with our giant lego but only once safety precautions have been taken! Learn about shapes, building and the need for safety clothes and equipment.

Dare to Discover Theatre

  • The Mitten (all grades)
  • Stranger in the woods (all grades)
  • Mortimer (preschool & K)
  • Paper Bag Princess (grades 1 to 3)

Colours of the Rainbow

Colours of the Rainbow

Preschool to grade 3. Children will discover what happens when different colours of light are mixed. After this, they will see how coloured water mixes. Children will then be given the three primary colours of paint to mix and discover on their own how to make the secondary colours.

Amazing Animals

The Amazing Animals of Northern Saskatchewan

Preschool to grade 3. Join us around the campfire and learn about the magnificent animals that live in northern Saskatchewan. We will find and identify the many animals in the camp site, study their footprints and compare them with our own. Children will learn what makes these animals so amazing.

Into the Aspen Grove

Kindergarten to grade 3. This is a seasonal program, from May to October. Discover the wonders of nature in a nearby city park! For this program children will walk from the museum to a nearby park. Through games, they will learn to distinguish between coniferous and broadleaf trees. They will learn some of the names of the shrubs and plants growing in and near the grove. Children will practice observation skills by participating in a special scavenger hunt. Free exploration in the museum after the outing will follow. The session will conclude with a story. In case of inclement weather please indicate an alternate program.
