The
Children’s Discovery Museum on the Saskatchewan is a not-for-profit
organization operating a children’s museum in Saskatoon.
Our mission is to foster creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong
love of learning in children ten and under, through hands-on exhibits,
programming, and outreach.
The Children’s Discovery Museum on the Saskatchewan fills
a unique role: We provide a bridge between the intimate home learning
environment and that of the curriculum-directed school by combining
play with specific learning objectives in a welcoming, informal,
and developmentally appropriate setting. In addition, through
our Access program, we ensure that financial barriers do not limit
access to our quality educational opportunities. We exist to serve
our constituents – children.
On May 13, 2009, we opened our doors at Market Mall. In our first
year of operations, we attracted 200 members and hosted 10,000
visitors, including 85 school groups, 30 of which were sponsored
by our Access program.
Our goal is to build or renovate a large, state-of-the art facility
in a downtown location with up to 10,000 square feet of exhibit
space and six to 12 permanent exhibits. We will continue to offer
quality programming and outreach activities, in addition to hosting
traveling exhibits and serving as a “town square”
for Saskatoon’s children and their caregivers.
An expanded facility will allow us to develop a greater range
of exhibits and programs which will reflect our heritage, culture
and landscape. This broader range of exhibits will more fully
complement early childhood and school programs. At the same time,
we will draw families into the city centre, and become a major
tourist attraction in Saskatoon, benefiting local businesses and
the city’s economy.
